Joint injections are commonly used to manage the following conditions:
- Tendonitis
- Bursitis
- Frozen shoulder
- Osteoarthritis
- Trigger finger
Minor ops are done to remove small lumps and bumps that are not dangerous but causing symptoms.
How the Procedure Works
Before the injection, the skin over the joint will be cleaned thoroughly. A needle connected to a syringe will then be inserted into the joint space. At this point, one of two things may happen:
Fluid may be withdrawn from the joint for laboratory analysis, or
Medication, typically corticosteroids, will be injected to reduce inflammation.
This approach can also be used for injecting medication into bursae or tendons, especially for tendonitis and bursitis.
Joint injections are particularly effective for inflammatory joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, and sometimes osteoarthritis. They work by delivering anti-inflammatory medication directly into the affected joint to help control inflammation.
Common joints treated include the knee, shoulder, ankle, elbow, and smaller joints in the hands and feet.
What to Expect After the Injection
It is common to experience a “steroid flare” following the injection, where pain and swelling may temporarily worsen before improving. This typically resolves within a few days as the medication begins to take effect.
You should follow post-injection care instructions carefully, including resting the joint for 72 hours to support healing.
Benefits of Joint Injections
Joint injections can help decrease pain and swelling while improving joint mobility. However, the effectiveness varies depending on your condition and how you respond to the treatment.
Potential Risks
As with any medical procedure, there are some risks involved, though they are uncommon:
Allergic reactions to the medication or antiseptic used
Infection (rare)
Post-injection flare (temporary increased pain and swelling)
Joint damage from repeated corticosteroid injections at the same site
Skin discoloration (lightening) at the injection area
Thinning of the skin (fat atrophy) at the injection site
Tendon rupture if the injection needle is misplaced
Pain during and after the procedure
Alternative Treatments
If you choose not to have a joint injection, other options include:
Oral anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen or Naproxen
Choosing not to pursue treatment at this time

Rest for 72 hours post-injection to promote healing.

The appointment is focused solely on administering the joint injection. Other conditions or treatments will not be discussed during this visit.
