Statement Regarding Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) for Obesity Treatment in Primary Care in Coventry
We would like to inform our patients that Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is not currently available for the treatment of obesity within NHS primary care services in Coventry, under the existing NHS England and NICE prescribing guidelines.
At present, NHS England only permits Mounjaro for use in type 2 diabetes, following specialist advice to be prescribed by a GP. As such, GPs in primary care are unable to prescribe it for obesity alone.
The current Mounjaro eligibility criteria set out nationally are:
A BMI of 40 or more
plus FOUR or more of the following diagnosed conditions:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Cardiovascular disease
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Dyslipidaemia

Healthy Lifestyles Coventry Service (Tier 2)
- A flexible 12-week programme offering health coaching, community weigh‑ins, 1:1/group support, self-help tools, budget-friendly recipes and physical activity guidance
- Integrated within the Adult Lifestyle Services (ICE in Coventry) it also supporting smoking cessation and alcohol reduction
- Family-focused, group-based sessions via Coventry City Council’s “Be Active Be Healthy” service for children at risk, typically 10 weeks long

- Multi-disciplinary team: endocrinologists, dietitians, bariatric surgeons, clinical psychologists.
- Offers structured lifestyle programmes, digital support (like W8Buddy), and bariatric surgery pathways for patients with a BMI ≥ 40, or ≥ 35 with comorbidities
